Synopsis

Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life.

Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood.

Review

The heroine is clumsy and a bit abnormal. She has an ability which allows her to find things in the Wood. Plucked by a wizard at 16, she watches her friend's lives pass by, as she stays with him in his castle to learn magic. She doesn't understand the reasons of the Dragon (wizard) and forces herself into his life and learns how to be a witch.

The beginning chapters are enticing. It grabs your full attention. Sadly, the middle part sort of drifted a ways and I lost interest. I'm so glad I struggled to finish the book. When Agnieszka learns what her magic is and how to use them, the story began to flow again. By far, the last 150 pages were the most exciting battle and most devious.

Thoroughly enjoyed it. I wish it wasn't so long but I got through it.
