Synopsis

Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.

Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store—for both of us.

The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us.

Review

First of all, I can't get over how similar Nicola Yoon's writing and story matches Rainbow Rowell; Eleanor & Park springs to mind.

Second, the fast paced love at first sight, is unrealistic. While I enjoyed the dramatics of clinging to the possibility of long lasting love, the entire span of Natasha+Daniel storyline happens in one day. For this, I rate 3 stars.

Third, I enjoyed the highs and lows of the story. Including the comedic conversation of science versus romanticism. Plus, the conclusion deserves a sound applause. This, I rate 4 stars.

In retrospect, I paused and thought about why this story is about an illegal Jamaican immigrant and an American born Korean. I looked up Nicola's biography and discovered the story is loosely based on her experience and life with her husband. Ah that makes sense now.
